The Small Business Optimism Index declined by 0.2 of a point in June to 98.6, slightly above the 51-year average of 98.
In June, 36% (seasonally adjusted) of all owners reported job openings they could not fill in the current period, up 2 points from May. 30% had openings for skilled workers (unchanged), and 13% had openings for unskilled labor (unchanged for the fifth consecutive month).
50% of small business owners reported capital outlays in the last six months, down 6 points from May and the lowest reading since August 2020.
Seasonally adjusted, a net 33% reported raising compensation, up 7 points from May and the most significant monthly increase since January 2020.
29% of owners raising average selling prices rose 4 points from May.
The net percent of owners expecting better business conditions fell 3 points from May to a net 22%.
19% of small business owners reported taxes as their single most important problem.
